The dune takes the name of \u201cPilat\u201d, deriving from the Gascon \u201cPilot\u201d, which means \u201cheap\u201d or \u201cmound\u201d. This spelling is already present on the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.geoportail.gouv.fr\/donnees\/carte-de-cassini\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> 18th century maps<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other hand, the seaside resort of Pyla-sur-Mer, near the Dune, was founded in the 1920s by real estate developer Daniel Meller.
