RED heatwave alert

From this Monday, August 11 at 12 p.m. and until Wednesday, August 13 at 6 a.m. minimum, the Gironde department is placed in RED heatwave alert due to an exceptional heatwave: temperatures above 40°C, potentially reaching record highs, are expected across the entire Arcachon Bay and the Dune of Pilat. This situation requires everyone to exercise the utmost caution.

Essential actions for your visit to the Dune du Pilat

During this period, it is essential to adopt the right reflexes:

  • Avoid climbing the Dune during the hottest hours : favor an early morning climb. On the ridge, there is no shade or water, the sand becomes scorching hot and the effort is greater in the heat.
  • Hydrate yourself regularly: Always carry a bottle of water with you and drink frequently, even if you are not thirsty. The risk of dehydration is high in extreme heat.
  • Protect yourself: Wear a hat, sunglasses, and effective sunscreen. Wear shoes (the sand can get very hot).
  • Comply with the regulations: Parking along the road is prohibited (access to the forest area prohibited – ORANGE alert for forest fires in progress).
  • Check the weather forecast before any visit : keep yourself informed of the development of vigilance and instructions.

Heatwaves expose you to:

  • Heat illness and heat stroke, especially in children, the elderly or isolated people.
  • Rapid dehydration, especially in cases of exertion or prolonged exposure.
  • An increased risk of forest fires, aggravated by wind and drought.

If you experience any symptoms (intense fatigue, nausea, headaches, cramps), seek shade, hydrate, and seek help immediately.

Raise awareness among those around you about the dangers of heat and the actions you can take to preserve this exceptional natural space.
