How was the dune of Pilat formed? How has it evolved to the present day? What traces of human occupation have we found there? What peculiarities have developed the plant and animal species present in this fragile ecosystem? What protection measures have been put in place to preserve this exceptional natural monument?
Our mediators answer these questions and accompany you to the summit of Europe's highest mobile sand mountain, while revealing some secrets about the natural and cultural heritage of this territory.
Our nature guides offer you environmental education tools on the crest of Dune to better understand the riches of this exceptional heritage.
By reading the landscape, they will return with you to the impacts related to the fire (fauna and flora) and will tell you the story of this intimate ocean of greenery linked to the formation of the highest Dune in Europe.

Hike from the Dune to the Banc d'Arguin
The Banc d'Arguin National Nature Reserve and the Syndicat Mixte de la Grande Dune du Pilat join forces and offer, every Wednesday in July and August, a hike accompanied by these two natural sites.
Schedule of the visit:
First, accompanied by one of our cultural mediators, you will discover how the Dune du Pilat was formed and where the sand that composes it comes from. At the top of the highest dune in Europe, you will enjoy an exceptional landscape between forest and ocean. Then, you will reach the foot of the dune on the beach side to approach the different species (flora and fauna) that inhabit this dune environment.
Afterwards, you will embark on a boat to reach the Banc d'Arguin where you can picnic while having a view of the whole of the Dune du Pilat.
A ranger from the nature reserve will help you discover the fauna and flora present on the site as well as all the measures put in place to protect this fragile environment in perpetual motion.
All you have to do is take the sea shuttle back to the beach and climb the dune again to return to the starting point.
1 day
Every Wednesday from July-August at 9:30 a.m. Visits are free, only sea transport costs 20 euros per participant. From 10 years old. Bring a picnic, water, sunscreen and suitable shoes. End time: 3 p.m.
