A look back at the land management committee of the Conservatoire du littoral – Grand Site de la Dune du Pilat

Chaired by Nathalie Le Yondre, President of the Joint Syndicate of the Grande Dune du Pilat, And Nathalie Madrid, Delegate of Rivages Aquitaine at the Coastal Conservatory, the management committee met in January in the presence of partners from both establishments.

Since 2011, the Syndicat Mixte is the manager of the land located in the classified site of the Dune du Pilat, acquired by the Conservatoire du littoralThe management agreement has just been renewed for a period of 6 years in order to continue the management of these properties.

The management committee is a participatory body for monitoring and evaluating management. This committee provided an opportunity to review the actions taken before, during, and after the summer 2022 fire and to discuss management guidelines to be implemented in 2025. 

Several major topics were discussed:

  • The assessment of land acquisition procedures carried out by the Conservatoire du littoral for almost 25 years;
  • The assessment of emergency forestry work following the fire and the forest health diagnosis – monitoring of the ecological state;
  • Monitoring of erosion and dune dynamics in conjunction with the Bureau of Geological and Mining Research (BRGM) and the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Coast Observatory;
  • Monitoring of the Kentish Plover (collaboration with the Arcachon Basin Marine Natural Park, the municipalities of La Teste-de-Buch and Lège-Cap-Ferret, the National Forestry Office, the Coastal Conservatory and the Teich Ornithological Reserve);
  • Management of uses and events on the Grand Site (free flight, filming, etc.);
  • Support for the scientific and academic community (archaeological excavations, promotion of the work of GRAMASA, University of Bordeaux, etc.);
  • Reception and mediation for all audiences;
  • Monitoring and analysis of attendance;
  • Securing the areas surrounding the Grand Site and actions related to regulations and prevention;
