Due to the strong phenomena of erosion and coastal retreat Due to recent events, access to the Petit Nice beach, located south of the Dune du Pilat, is banned until April 30, 2026.
A municipal order from the City of La Teste-de-Buch prohibits access to the Petit Nice beach as well as the use of the access ramp located opposite the lifeguard station.
A spectacular erosion phenomenon
In the space of ten days, the coastline has receded by about 5 to 6 meters in the Petit Nice area.Dune erosion has created vertical escarpments in places, 3 to 7 meters high, making descending and especially climbing back up the dune particularly dangerous. This phenomenon is part of a broader context of erosion of the Atlantic coastline, regularly observed on the ocean beaches of the southern Arcachon Basin.
Significant risks for visitors
To prevent accidents, visitors are asked to strictly adhere to the closures and signage in place on site. The order highlights several risks: falls, injuries, burial under unstable sand, and the impossibility of reaching the top of the dune ridge once below. Visitors are advised to explore other areas of the coastline and the beaches currently accessible within the municipality before planning their outing. This temporary closure aims to ensure public safety in a rapidly changing natural environment, heavily affected by winter storms and heavy swells.
Access to other beaches in the municipality remains possible.
