Between Pilat or Pyla, you hesitate?
Only one spelling is correct. The dune takes the name of “Pilat”, deriving from the Gascon “Pilot”, which means “heap” or “mound”. This spelling is already present on the 18th century maps.
On the other hand, the seaside resort of Pyla-sur-Mer, near the Dune, was founded in the 1920s by real estate developer Daniel Meller. To give it a more exotic sound, he opts for a “y”, the place will be called as follows: Pyla-sur-Mer.
