Fire: the Network of Great Sites of France expresses its solidarity

At its summit, the Dune du Pilat offers an exceptional panorama on a unique triptych on a national scale: forest, dune and ocean. It is one of the most extraordinary landscapes of our country which has just been affected by the fire. By damaging the forest, an emblematic element essential to the beauty of the site and the spirit of the place, the fire has damaged the national natural heritage. This millennial forest has developed gradually in a natural way on ancient dunes. Its strong historical and ecological value is today impacted, the biodiversity shaken, the damaged landscape.

The Network of Great Sites of France wishes to express its greatest solidarity with the manager of the Dune du Pilat, a site of exceptional value, with the elected officials and the inhabitants of the territory in this ordeal.

Louis Villaret President of the Network of Great Sites of France.

Symbols of the richness of the natural heritage of the Bassin d'Arcachon, thea Dune du Pilat and its thousand-year-old forest are protected landscapes under the law of May 2, 1930 on natural monuments and sites. The Syndicat Mixte de la Grande Dune du Pilat manages the properties of the Conservatoire du littoral spread over the entire Grand Site (506 hectares) and the reception area allowing access to the Dune. It works on a daily basis to preserve these fragile environments, to ensure their enhancement and their visit in the best possible conditions.

The Syndicat Mixte is committed to a Grand Site de France labeling process which aims to reconcile the preservation of heritage values, the living environment of the inhabitants and sustainable local development.
