ORANGE heatwave alert

A orange vigilance Heatwave measures are being implemented throughout the Gironde region starting this Wednesday, May 27th at 12pm, with high temperatures expected.

On the Dune du Pilat, sun exposure is particularly intense and the sand can reach very high temperatures.

Essential actions for your visit to the Dune du Pilat

During this period, it is essential to adopt the right reflexes:

  • Avoid climbing the Dune during the hottest hours (11am-6pm): Opt for an early morning ascent. On the ridge, there is no shade or water source, the sand becomes scorching hot, and the effort is greater in the heat.
  • Hydrate yourself regularly: Always carry a bottle of water with you and drink frequently, even if you are not thirsty. The risk of dehydration is high in extreme heat.
  • Protect yourself: Wear a hat, sunglasses, and effective sunscreen. Wear shoes (the sand can get very hot).

At the reception village, water points and shaded areas are available for you to take a break and refresh yourself.

Pay attention to those accompanying you, especially children and the elderly.

Heatwaves expose you to:

  • Heat illness and heat stroke, especially in children, the elderly or isolated people.
  • Rapid dehydration, especially in cases of exertion or prolonged exposure.
  • An increased risk of forest fires, aggravated by wind and drought.

If you experience any symptoms (intense fatigue, nausea, headaches, cramps), seek shade, hydrate, and seek help immediately.

Raise awareness among those around you about the dangers of heat and the actions you can take to preserve this exceptional natural space.
